Maj. Samuel M. Griffith, 36, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Dec. 14 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 4th Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, Marine Forces Reserve, West Palm Beach, Fla. A United States Marine reservist stationed in West Palm Beach died in Afghanistan. Maj. Sam Griffith, 36, was deployed to Afghanistan on his third tour of duty last month, said William Griffith by phone from his North Carolina home this evening. He served with the 4th Anglico, a unit based in West Palm Beach. Officials with the 4th Anglico were not available to comment Wednesday evening. Griffith entered the military through the Naval ROTC at Penn State. He leaves a wife and two sons, one of whom will turn 6 tomorrow. A memorial service was held at the Vineyard Community Church, 4444 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Sam’s name to the USO, his church, or your favorite charity. Published in The Palm Beach Post on December 2011.
